Today Facebook celebrates its 10th birthday.
Who would have thought that in 2004 an experiment to connect Harvard students would become one of the world’s biggest companies?
To mark the occasion Facebook have put out one of those fuzzy warm videos that all tech companies love.
“That’s why I’m even more excited about the next ten years than the last. The first ten years were about bootstrapping this network. Now we have the resources to help people across the world solve even bigger and more important problems.”
And here is what Mark Zuckerberg had to say.
There is always scepticism around the company – think privacy woes, share value falls and now worries that kids and teens are dropping the site but let’s be real this is still a global powerhouse that is growing exponentially. As Zuckerberg alludes to above, there are still many untapped and emerging markets to spread into.
The question now is how can Facebook really capitalise on mobile and get revenue up in an area that has seen massive growth over the past few years. There is also the threat of increased competition from other tech super majors. It’s not enough to dominate in one area now and the social platform is just one of the products Facebook must offer.
Still I get a feeling we are only at the beginning of the Facebook story.
