Forbes has publishes its list of the top 10 grossing actors at the global box office in 2013.

This isn’t a list of how much money the actors made but how much money their films made.

Bottom line: If your next film stars one of these guys and girls then its likely you’re looking at a hit!

1. Dwayne  “The Rock” Johnson

$1.3 billion / Key Films: Fast & Furious 6, G.I. Joe, Pain & Gain

2. Robert Downey, Jr.

$1.2 billion / Key Film: Iron Man 3

3. Steve Carell

$964 million / Key Films: Despicable Me 2, The Way Way Back, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

4. Vin Diesel

$887 million / Key Films: Fast & Furious 6, Riddick

5. Sandra Bullock

$862 million / Key Films: The Heat, Gravity

6. Paul Walker

$789 million / Key Film: Fast & Furious 6

7. Billy Crystal

$743 million / Key Film: Monsters University

8. John Goodman

$743 million / Key Film: Monsters University

9. Chris Hemsworth

$701 million / Key Films: Thor: The Dark World, Rush

10. Jennifer Lawrence

$700 million / Key Films: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, American Hustle

Some notes:

  • 8 are men, 2 are women
  • 8 are white, 2 are of mixed heritage
  • Fast & Furious 6 was a career high for Diesel, The Rock and the late Paul Walker.
  • Crystal, Goodman and Carell all feature thanks to animated smash hits. Never count out the kid dollar!
  • The Marvel brand is well repped with both Thor & Iron Man. Next year’s Marvel offerings are also strong.

Top of the list is The Rock who has now been building up his star power very consistently. His status took a hit in the mid 2000s when he switched his focus to family fare and then to DTV style low-budget R -rated actioners. But now he’s really hit his stride as the charismatic face of a number of PG 13 big action franchises. And he can still bring it in other roles too as he stole the show in Pain & Gain.

Who will top the list in 2014?

A lot of these actors will be high on next year’s list too. Fast & Furious 7 is still currently scheduled for 2014 even after Paul Walker’s tragic death. The series has been on a roll since part 5 and will no doubt be one of the biggest films of the year again – that means Johnson (also in Hercules), Diesel (also in Guardians of The Galaxy) and Walker will all feature.

Hemsworth has a number of films out next year but its Jennifer Lawrence who could end up on top with her two massive blockbusters in 2014: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 & X-Men Days Of Future Past.

Thinking about which actors are in multiple future blockbusters, Chris Pratt could do well with The Lego Movie and Guardians of The Galaxy, Jonah Hill has Wolf of Wall St, How to Train Your Dragon 2 and 22 Jump Street, 2012’s golden boy Channing Tatum has Jupiter Ascending and 22 Jump Street, Ian McKellan is in X-Men & the final Hobbit.

I think Jamie Foxx could be the start of the year though with Rio, Horrible Bosses 2, Annie and Amazing Spider-Man 2 – all of which look like hits to me.
