Sony At Gamescom 2013: Everything You Need To Know

Sony Deliver the Goods

PS4 Red Controller

Last night SCEE delivered their conference at gamescom in Germany. A lot of interesting news emerged including the final piece of the PS4 puzzle, the much-anticipated launch date.

Here’s you everything you need to know from the show:

The PS4 Release Date

The big one, the Sony PlayStation 4 releases in the US and Canada on 15th November and Europe on 29th November.

PS4 Has Sold A Million Already

Group CEO and President Andrew House revealed that Sony has already had more than 1 million pre-orders of the new system. I bet those PS3 launch trouble all seem like a distant memory now.

The PS4 Launch Titles

33 big name titles including plenty of AAA favourites were announced for release before Christmas including the following 15 at launch:

  • NBA 2K14
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts
  • Skylanders Swap Force
  • Need for Speed: Rivals
  • Battlefield 4
  • Madden 25
  • FIFA 14
  • NBA Live
  • Killzone: Shadow Fall
  • #DRIVECLUB
  • Knack
  • Assassins Creed IV Black Flag
  • Watch_Dogs
  • Just Dance 2014
  • Lego Marvel Super Heroes

We also saw new trailers from Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack, InFamous: Second Son

A Better Look At The PS4 UI

Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. demo’d the slick new interface:

Cross-Gen Discounts

Following Activision’s reveal that purchases of current gen Call Of Duty: Ghosts can be upgraded to the next-gen version for $10, Sony also announced they will be offering similar scheme backed by big name partners at Activision, Ubisoft, and EA, Warner Bros. Under the scheme gamers who purchase PS3 titles that also appear on PS4 will be able to upgrade to the PS4 versions at a discounted rate for a limited time. The first titles under the scheme are Call of Duty: Ghosts, Watch Dogs, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, and Battlefield 4.

“We see this as a great way to reward PS3 gamers for their loyalty when transitioning to PS4, ensuring that it is as simple and accessible as possible. ” Andrew House

Vita Value

The struggling PS Vita saw its RRP slashed to €199.99 including a memory card. The PS3 was also reduced to €199.99. The Vita also saw new previews of Media Molecule’s Tearaway as well as the announcement of Football Manager Classic 2014, Borderlands 2 and Fez.

The Real Driving Simulator Is Back

Gran Turismo 6 for PS3 hits stores on December 6th. Also confirmed was the development of the rumoured GT movie produced by Hollywood vets Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti

Even Controllers Get The Blues

The PS4’s DualShock 4 controller will be available in ‘Wave Blue’ and ‘Magma Red’ as well as the standard black version at launch.

PS4 Partners With ISPs

In a very interesting move, Sony is to partner with select ISPs across Europe where they will offer PS4 friendly packages:

“Our plan is to offer a range of broadband packages to PS4 gamers that included reserved parts of the pipe for gaming, broadband speeds of up to 200mb/s and attractive PS4 and PlayStation Plus offerings.” Jim Ryan, SCEE

The UK  gets Richards Branson’s Virgin Media while Ono, Orange and T-Mobile are confirmed for other territories.

“We’re delighted to say Virgin Media is Sony’s PlayStation 4 UK ISP partner for its hugely-anticipated launch which is now confirmed to be on 29 November. We’re already hard at work with them to make this the best entertainment experience for gamers across the country.” Jon James, Executive Director, Broadband and Digital Entertainment, Virgin Media

PlayStation Plus Gets Better

PS Plus subscribers on PS4 will get 3 GB of cloud storage while PS4 users will also get access to a 14 day trial and will receive upon subscribing for a year an additional 90 days of access. A smart move to get more gamers on board PS Plus – a move which could net Sony $1.2 bn a year.

Super Stardust’s follow-up Resogun will be free on PS Plus at launch as well as the previously announced DriveClub PS Edition

Also for PS3 PS Plus members Assassin’s Creed 3 was confirmed as a free title this September. XBOX fans don’t worry you still get AC 2… ahem.

Watch_Dog At The Movies

In an unusual move, Ubisoft announced development of the Watch_Dogs movie with Sony Pictures and New Regency. It’s a surprising seeing as the game hasn’t come out yet but speaks to the faith Ubisft have in the property. This of course follows the creation of Ubisoft’s own motion picture unit which follows the original Marvel Studios model of developing in-house IP but sharing production and distribution with Hollywood majors. Splinter Cell with Tom Hardy and Assassin’s Creed with Michael Fassbender are also in advanced stages of development with New Regency.

“Sony Pictures and New Regency are ideal partners for us. Their deep production expertise and willingness to allow us to maintain a strong creative voice in the film means that we’re on track to deliver a movie that can build upon the excitement that Watch Dogs already is generating as a game.” Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO, Ubisoft Motion Pictures
