Microsoft’s XBOX One Gets Un-Kinect-ed

There have been so many reversals we should just calling it the XBOX 180!

Microsoft Kinect

A few months ago after a huge online backlash, Microsoft reversed their DRM policies for the XBOX One. Was it a good move? On the whole probably yes, though it was worrying to see them abandon a major core tenant of their new system so quickly.

Now they’ve done it again.

This week in an interview with IGN, chief Xbox One platform architect Marc Whitten revealed that the XBOX One does not in fact require the new Kinect sensor for it to function…

the console will still function if Kinect isn’t plugged in, although you won’t be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor. You have the ability to completely turn the sensor off in your settings. When in this mode, the sensor is not collecting any information…

So its good news for those concerned about privacy, but what this means to me more than anything is that Microsoft is not really serious about Kinect. Or at least not as serious as they were before. If they do launch a second SKU without the Kinect then they may as well pull the plug on the project. The tech can only take off if the user base is 100% and not split – developers will have to decide if its worth their time and effort to develop Kinect features and going by past performance its unlikely they will.

Sony has already said that the PS4 Eye camera is an optional extra and this has pretty much killed off any hope for that tech. If Microsoft are serious about Kinect then they will have to really prove to developers and now consumers that’s its worth plugging in.

Once again as with the DRM situation it’s good to see Microsoft listening to their consumers. But this is starting to set a bad precedent. Will we have to second guess Microsoft on everything they do now? And if a vocal minority can change the years-in-the-making strategy can this end up hindering progresses?

It’s making me lose faith in the notion that Microsoft knows what they are doing and it’s making me question if they have thought about this hard enough. This is a billion dollar launch and I can’t believe a huge corporation like Microsoft could change their course of action again and the eleventh hour.

Its time for Microsoft to stop backtracking and display some confidence. Every time it makes one of these reversals it’s just giving more ammunition to their rivals and at this point PS4 is doing well enough without Microsoft’s help!
