** Minor spoilers**
I saw Sony’s This Is The End on the weekend.
I am a semi-fan of the Judd Apatow movies (though amazingly this film isn’t actually an Apatow production from what I can gather – even though the whole cast is made up of his regulars) and in particular I love 40 Year Old Virgin, Superbad and Pineapple Express. This one was also written and directed by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen who made those last two films.
So despite fears it would be a self-indulgent smug fest I really had high hopes for This Is The End. Luckily I found it really funny and one of the more entertaining films of Summer 2013. (Maybe it helped that I saw it right after sitting through the turgid World War Z?).
Plus if it helps, the right-wing panic rag Daily Mail predictably gave it a 1/5. That’s all the recommendation I need.
But it was only after the film that I realised that for a film full of disgusting jokes, violent deaths and non stop profanity it was actually a pretty religious film!
In the film our heroes live vacuous, drug-fuelled lives and are so self-absorbed they don’t realise until it’s too late that the apocalypse is taking place. As a result are left to rot after the rapture has taken place. But in the end after a lot of horrible mishaps they come to the realisation that it’s only by rejecting their selfish ways will they find redemption and salvation. So the movie is essentially telling its audience to be upstanding, selfless, moral people!
Via the medium of urine drinking and comedy decapitations… obviously.
I wonder what the religious right would make of it. On one hand its pretty juvenile, crude and filthy (not necessarily negatives) and on the other it champions a lot of ideals they would probably agree with. Now there’s a dilemma for you!
Well played Rogen, Goldberg, Franco, et al, well played.
P.S. You will also be hard pressed to find a better / more ridiculous ending to any film all year.
