Worldwide Box Office in 2012: The Top 20 Films

Box Office

Find out what were the top 20 films of 2012 at the global box office. Including Worldwide Grosses and the Domestic (USA) / International (Rest of World) split.

Notables:

  • Avengers grossed $400m more than the second biggest film to become the third biggest film of all time. Who would have thought that at the beginning of the year? Who would have thought that in 2008 when Iron Man came out? An amazing achievement.
  • Skyfall becomes most successful Bond film ever. A billion dollar 007 is a huge success. Again who saw that coming?
  • Dark Knight Rises crosses $1bn and is a great end to a superb trilogy but you can’t escape the fact that there is a sizable negative opinion against the film and adjusted for inflation this final Christopher Nolan Batman film is not the phenomenon that the Dark Knight was.
  • Again $1bn for the Hobbit is very good. But in terms of tickets numbers way down on the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. Adjusting for inflation and the 3-D / HFR surcharge means Return of the King is still far and way the highpoint of the series.
  • Ice Age – once again an over seas juggernaut. When your film makes a pretty impressive $161m domestically and still has a 81% / 18% split then that’s a dream come true for Blue Sky & Fox.
  • Hunger Games’ $400m domestic run is huge and if it had a better domestic / international ratio it would have easily cracked the top 5. Still this is a franchise that’s set to grown and grow.
  • Fox hit a great D / I split with Life of Pi. An unqualified global success. Great imagery & storytelling can transcend borders.
  • Prometheus, Django Unchained and Ted prove that R rated films can still hit very big. What was amazing is that two of them were completely original titles and even Prometheus was only loosely connected to the Alien franchise.
  • Lionsgate had a very good year with two of the top 10 movies and hot over $1bn for the first time ever.
  • 4 of the top 20 were CG animated movies.
  • 3 of the top 10 were super hero movies.
