Who would win in a fight between the Hulk and Superman?
The rivalry between comic book giants, Marvel and DC has always been fierce but things have steeped up a notch now that comic book movies are blowing up at the box office. No summer is now complete without superheroes saving the world and raking in the dough.
We all have our favourites but who is the box office champ? This infographic charts both companies cinematic history from 1966’s Batman: The Movie (a personal fave – don’t believe me? Well take a look below) and 1986’s Howard the Duck right up to last years titans: The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises.
- Marvel – The Avengers $617m
- DC – The Dark Knight $567
- Marvel – Punisher Warzone $8.5
- DC – Steel $2.4m
Is amazing to think that even adjusted for inflation recent films like Jonah Hex are out grossed by films decades older – just think how many tickets Batman ‘89 and Superman ‘78 must have sold to have made so much money!
The huge success of Marvel Studios means Marvel is clearly winning at the moment in terms of the number of concurrent successful franchises. This makes it as much of Disney vs. Warner Bros. battle as it is a Marvel and DC one, but I bet somewhere deep within DC HQ a crack team is working on their own version of a unified universe…
In any case it’s a good time to be a fan!
